He despises skin contact, always wearing gloves on his hands. Kaz rarely shows his emotions, and when he does, he has difficulty expressing them. Kaz also holds a penchant for wrath and revenge; as he always swears to avenge his deceased brother's death. He seems to have a soft side only when he is around Inej, and recently started to realize he has genuine feelings for her.
History
Kaz first came to Ketterdam with his brother Jordie Rietveld at the age of nine. They had sold their father's farm after he'd died, and used the money to start a new life in the city. The siblings, especially Jordie, were conned out of all their money by Pekka Rollins, who was going by the alias Jakob Hertzoon, and were left penniless. The pair were left on the streets in dire poverty.
Both Kaz and Jordie caught the plague when it swept through Ketterdam. Jordie died of the disease, and Kaz fell very ill as well. The siblings were presumed dead and their bodies were collected and brought out to sea but Kaz, barely alive, swam back to Ketterdam using his brother's body as a float. The experience was extremely traumatic for young Kaz and left him unable to bear contact with another person's skin and caused his voice to develop a rasp.
After his brother's death, Kaz vowed to make Pekka Rollins pay for conning him out of their money and bringing about Jordie's death. He changed his surname to Brekker to cut off ties to his past and joined up with The Dregs. Kaz started out as a simple grunt, but quickly rose up the ranks in the Dregs to become a lieutenant, feared by many for his precise ruthlessness. It was due to him that the Crow Club, one of the Dregs' main source of income, was reestablished and the formerly scant Fifth Harbour now flourished with business. The Dregs gained power and reputation mostly due to Kaz, and he is viewed by many as the true leader of the Dregs as opposed to Per Haskell.

Kaz has no Grisha power or magical abilities, but he is skilled at lock-picking, card tricks, and sleight of hand. He is privy to information of just about anyone and anything in the city, due to Inej's sleuth-like abilities and his considerable influence over Ketterdam.
His sleight of hand skills have been shown many times through the series. One case being when he took a gun from someone, took the bullets out and gave it back in a matter of seconds.
Health
Kaz has a limp in his left leg, the severity of which varies on a day-by-day basis. For this reason, he carries a cane.

Inej and Kaz are extremely close and have fought side by side in the Dregs for over two years. Kaz originally rescued her from the severe treatment of Tante Heleen at the Menagerie and convinced her to become indentured with The Dregs instead. Inej is Kaz's second-in-command and the person he trusts the most in the world, enough to take his gloves off in front of her.

Inej has deep bronze skin and dark hair that she usually keeps in a tightly coiled braid. She is described to have an angular, lean figure. Inej wears a quilted vest, breeches, and a tunic. When she is doing work for Kaz, she wears a hood.
Personality
Inej is mostly know for her reserved nature. She is mentally incredibly strong, and goes for her own aspiration, without hesitation. She is quiet and morally unwavering, unafraid to speak her opinion when she feels it is needed. She is skeptical of most people, but is not outwardly harsh, and willing to offer her friendship to those who have proven themselves to be good people. Inej is incredibly traditional, often reciting Suli proverbs as advice and general commentary. She feels more secure with knives in her possession, preferably her own and takes comfort in the strength of her title, "The Wraith".
History
Inej grew up in a family of acrobats and lived traveling in Suli caravans. She learned to walk the high wire barefoot as a child.
A few days before she turned 14, she was with her family in the west coast near Os Kervo performing in a carnival. Inej was rudely awakened from a nap and captured by slavers early one morning and subsequently sold to Tante Heleen, an owner of a pleasure house in Ketterdam, where she was forced to work in the Menagerie as an Indenture.
Equipment
When Inej first met Kaz Brekker she overheard him talking to Heleen asking her for information about her clients. Inej later approached Kaz and offered to help him but he did not respond and walked away. Kaz returned the next day to buy her contract from Heleen and gave Inej the choice to join The Dregs.
Inej has custom fabrikator-made leather slippers with coarse rubber soles. They are perfectly fitted and can grip any surface. She also has brass knuckles on her right hip, climbing spikes and pads on her knees for crawling and climbing. The pads also hide blades that are activated by a trigger on her ankles.
Inej has many knives, all of which are named after Saints. The ones hidden in her forearms have quick releases: Sankt Petyr on her right hand, her first knife given to her by Kaz, and Sankta Alina a knife with a bone handle. Sankta Marya and Anastasia are on her thighs, Sankt Vladimir in one of her boots and Sankta Lizabeta on her belt.

Because of her background as an acrobat, Inej has excellent climbing skills, agility and body coordination. She also has a gift for stealth, never making any sound as she moves.

Before he was thrown into Hellgate, Matthias had worn his hair long and had golden skin. However, due to his years in prison, Matthias is pale, his hair shorn, and he is covered in wounds and scars. His appearance was also changed before the Six Crows breached the Ice Court to avoid identification from the other Drüskelle; where his hair was tinted black and his eyes darkened temporarily by Nina Zenik's Tailor abilities.
Personality
Matthias was originally a prisoner at Hellgate, an inhumane penitentiary where he was thrown after Nina outed him as a slave trader. A year in confinement have made him cold, brutal, hateful and unforgiving, and his only will to continue living being his wish for revenge against the girl who betrayed him. Even after escaping, Matthias is angrier and colder than he was originally with Nina. Time spent with the Dregs has made him looser and more genuine, but he is still standoffish and hot-tempered, especially with those he doesn't know well. However, the soft spot he has always harboured for Nina grows throughout the duration of the Crows' journey to the point of affection.
History
Matthias was originally a Druskëlle of Fjerda, and the best in his ranks after being taken under the wing of Drüskelle commander, Jarl Brum. He hunted witches as the Drüskelle claimed their religion demanded it so, and was on the ship that Nina had been imprisoned on. He survived the shipwreck with Nina, and they traveled together until Nina got him put in Hellgate for being a slaver during their stay in Ketterdam.

Nina Zenik is a Heartrender from Ravka who joined The Dregs. She worked at the House of the White Rose and used her power in her services there until Kaz Brekker asked her to join him in his quest to break into the Ice Court.

Her beauty and her charm almost caused her to become a courtesan when she first arrived at Ketterdam, but Kaz sent Inej to offer her a place with The Dregs, instead.

Nina is bold, loud and hilarious. She has a terrible singing voice and loves to indulge in food like cake. Despite her forwardness, Nina is shown to also be extremely charming and even forms a strong bond with Inej. However, above all her other traits, Nina is very loyal to her Ravkan roots and deems herself a Grisha soldier to the Second Army first, always putting her country's needs before hers.
History
Nina is a Ravkan Heartrender who trained in the Second Army. She decided to cut her lessons short to start going on missions early, since the Second Army was low on soldiers.
While in The Wandering Isle, on a mission with Zoya Nazyalensky, she wandered into a camp of Fjerdan Drüskelle. She pretended to be a Kaelish girl, but the Drüskelle saw through her disguise. Matthias Helvar was part of the group that captured her.
After being captured by the Drüskelle, Nina was taken aboard a ship with other captured Grisha, one of which was a Fabrikator farmer. She was put in a cage and experienced grueling treatment and mocking at the hands of the guards.
One night, the ship experienced a massive storm. In the chaos, Nina managed to break free from her chains and escape her cage. Matthias escaped with her, and they managed to get to shore.
After the storm, Matthias and Nina stuck together. Though they argued at times, they became allies, if not close friends, until Nina turned Matthias in to a Kerch merchant, claiming that he was a slaver who had captured her. The Kerch merchant brought the two of them to Ketterdam, where Matthias was sent to to the prison of Hellgate.
It was later revealed that Nina had turned Matthias in to protect him. She was being watched by other Grisha and had feared they would capture him and bring him to Ravka, possibly leading to his execution. After his imprisonment, Nina stayed in Kerch instead of returning to her home country of Ravka, planning to get Matthias out of Hellgate. She began working at the House of the White Rose as a member of the Dregs.
Powers and Abilities
Nina is a Grisha, specifically a Heartrender. She is also gifted with languages. She's shown herself to be able to speak Kerch, Kaelish, Fjerdan, and Ravkan, but she may speak more due to her education and training in the Second Army.
Though Nina is not a Healer, she has some proficiency with healing and manages to nurse Inej back to health after she is stabbed. She also dabbles in the art of Tailoring, and uses her skills throughout the Crows' journey to alter the appearance of the members if need be.
In Crooked Kingdom its revealed that after surviving the worst effects of jurda parem her abilities as a heartrender have changed from manipulating living flesh to manipulating dead flesh. She controlled crushed remains from a graveyard, a collection of bones, dead bodies, and the cells of a body found in the morgue.

Appearance
Jesper is of Zemeni nationality and has dark brown skin. He always has his pearl-handled pistols with him, wherever he goes. Fellow Dregs member Inej Ghafa describes him as being 'long and lean', especially without his pistols and remarked on how he looked like a gangly-limbed bird. Jesper has gray eyes because his father is from the Wandering Isles.
Personality
Jesper is a gambler. He is witty and sarcastic, but is friendly when he wants to be. Though Jesper has good intentions, he can be loose-tongued at times. He is good-natured, cocky, and teasing.
Leigh Bardugo herself has confirmed that Jesper is bisexual, according to the context in the book. His consistent flirting with Wylan is evidence of such. '"Besides, I have other skills that bring me more pleasure and profit than this. Lots of other skills" Wylan coughed.'
History
Jesper left his home country Novyi Zem to attend university in Ketterdam. However, he became addicted to gambling and quickly fell into debt to support his addiction.
He joined The Dregs soon after to cover up his gambling debts, as well as support his addiction, and became an ally and friend of Kaz Brekker. His father still thinks he attends the university.
Powers and Abilities
Jesper is a Grisha, specifically a Fabrikator, otherwise known as a Durast. However, he has not been trained, so his powers are not properly honed and rather weak. He's also a talented sharpshooter and marksman. It is believed that maybe the reason he can shoot so well, is because his powers guid his bullet. since his mother taught him how to shoot and she had the same kind of powers.

Appearance
Wylan has ruddy curls and blue eyes and is the youngest of the group at age sixteen. His young age is only accentuated by his looks, which make him seem younger. Matthias Helvar believed his age to be fifteen instead of sixteen.
Kaz Brekker described him as someone who "looked like a child- smooth-skinned, wide-eyed, like a silk-eared puppy in a room full of fighting dogs."
Jesper Fahey stated that Wylan was "cuter when he was smart." He also mentioned that maybe he liked his "stupid face" at the end of the book.
He greatly resembles his father, Jan Van Eck.
Due to Nina's Tailoring abilities, enhanced with the power of jurda parem, Wylan used to have the appearance of Kuwei Yul-Bo. Genya Safin later changes his appearance to his original one.
Personality
Wylan is rather considerate and innocent, despite the fact that he is a part of the Dregs. His privileged status makes him unused to violence and he doesn't like confrontation. Wylan is also very shy, often speaking and commenting only if he is asked to and mostly keeps to himself throughout the ship journey to Djerholm.
Wylan also has a curious, contemplative mind, often questioning how things function such as on Jesper's pistols and the Ice Court's aqueduct system. He prefers music and numbers to words, as he cannot read because of his dyslexia. Wylan is quite insecure regarding his disability. This is also due to his father's rejection and hatred of him because of his inability to read or write. He does not like being compared to a criminal and takes pride in his knowledge of demolition.

Although a gifted artist and musician, Wylan cannot read. Because of this, his father hated him and Wylan left to fend for himself on the streets, ending up working for the Dregs. His father regularly sent letters to mock his reading disability.

After being captured by the Drüskelle, Nina was taken aboard a ship with other captured Grisha, one of which was a Fabrikator farmer. She was put in a cage and experienced grueling treatment and mocking at the hands of the guards.
One night, the ship experienced a massive storm. In the chaos, Nina managed to break free from her chains and escape her cage. Matthias escaped with her, and they managed to get to shore.
After the storm, Matthias and Nina stuck together. Though they argued at times, they became allies, if not close friends, until Nina turned Matthias in to a Kerch merchant, claiming that he was a slaver who had captured her. The Kerch merchant brought the two of them to Ketterdam, where Matthias was sent to to the prison of Hellgate.
It was later revealed that Nina had turned Matthias in to protect him. She was being watched by other Grisha and had feared they would capture him and bring him to Ravka, possibly leading to his execution. After his imprisonment, Nina stayed in Kerch instead of returning to her home country of Ravka, planning to get Matthias out of Hellgate. She began working at the House of the White Rose as a member of the Dregs.
Powers and Abilities
Nina is a Grisha, specifically a Heartrender. She is also gifted with languages. She's shown herself to be able to speak Kerch, Kaelish, Fjerdan, and Ravkan, but she may speak more due to her education and training in the Second Army.
Though Nina is not a Healer, she has some proficiency with healing and manages to nurse Inej back to health after she is stabbed. She also dabbles in the art of Tailoring, and uses her skills throughout the Crows' journey to alter the appearance of the members if need be.
In Crooked Kingdom its revealed that after surviving the worst effects of jurda parem her abilities as a heartrender have changed from manipulating living flesh to manipulating dead flesh. She controlled crushed remains from a graveyard, a collection of bones, dead bodies, and the cells of a body found in the morgue.

Jesper
Appearance
Jesper is of Zemeni nationality and has dark brown skin. He always has his pearl-handled pistols with him, wherever he goes. Fellow Dregs member Inej Ghafa describes him as being 'long and lean', especially without his pistols and remarked on how he looked like a gangly-limbed bird. Jesper has gray eyes because his father is from the Wandering Isles.
Personality
Jesper is a gambler. He is witty and sarcastic, but is friendly when he wants to be. Though Jesper has good intentions, he can be loose-tongued at times. He is good-natured, cocky, and teasing.
Leigh Bardugo herself has confirmed that Jesper is bisexual, according to the context in the book. His consistent flirting with Wylan is evidence of such. '"Besides, I have other skills that bring me more pleasure and profit than this. Lots of other skills" Wylan coughed.'
History
Jesper left his home country Novyi Zem to attend university in Ketterdam. However, he became addicted to gambling and quickly fell into debt to support his addiction.
He joined The Dregs soon after to cover up his gambling debts, as well as support his addiction, and became an ally and friend of Kaz Brekker. His father still thinks he attends the university.
Powers and Abilities
Jesper is a Grisha, specifically a Fabrikator, otherwise known as a Durast. However, he has not been trained, so his powers are not properly honed and rather weak. He's also a talented sharpshooter and marksman. It is believed that maybe the reason he can shoot so well, is because his powers guid his bullet. since his mother taught him how to shoot and she had the same kind of powers.

Wylan
Appearance
Wylan has ruddy curls and blue eyes and is the youngest of the group at age sixteen. His young age is only accentuated by his looks, which make him seem younger. Matthias Helvar believed his age to be fifteen instead of sixteen.
Kaz Brekker described him as someone who "looked like a child- smooth-skinned, wide-eyed, like a silk-eared puppy in a room full of fighting dogs."
Jesper Fahey stated that Wylan was "cuter when he was smart." He also mentioned that maybe he liked his "stupid face" at the end of the book.
He greatly resembles his father, Jan Van Eck.
Due to Nina's Tailoring abilities, enhanced with the power of jurda parem, Wylan used to have the appearance of Kuwei Yul-Bo. Genya Safin later changes his appearance to his original one.
Personality
Wylan is rather considerate and innocent, despite the fact that he is a part of the Dregs. His privileged status makes him unused to violence and he doesn't like confrontation. Wylan is also very shy, often speaking and commenting only if he is asked to and mostly keeps to himself throughout the ship journey to Djerholm.
Wylan also has a curious, contemplative mind, often questioning how things function such as on Jesper's pistols and the Ice Court's aqueduct system. He prefers music and numbers to words, as he cannot read because of his dyslexia. Wylan is quite insecure regarding his disability. This is also due to his father's rejection and hatred of him because of his inability to read or write. He does not like being compared to a criminal and takes pride in his knowledge of demolition.
History
Although a gifted artist and musician, Wylan cannot read. Because of this, his father hated him and Wylan left to fend for himself on the streets, ending up working for the Dregs. His father regularly sent letters to mock his reading disability.
